Should More Moms Coach?

I am a mom. I am a coach.

I have been coaching my entire adult life. I was a coach long before I became a parent. I have tried at different times in my life to give up coaching, but God doesn't seem to want me to do that. At least so far. I believe that this is something that God has called and gifted me to do.

Now I'm a mom. Even though my kids are still young, it is my natural instinct to want and expect that I will be a part of their athletic lives as a coach. Even in a sport that I don't know (soccer), I was still willing to coach because this is what I love to do.

What about other moms who aren't already coaches? Should they coach their kids?

I honestly hadn't really thought about this question until I came across this article about mom coaches. (When you look at it open up the pdf at the bottom of the page for the full article. It is worth reading.)

Here are some of the points made.

When parents are asked to volunteer to coach it's usually the dads who step up.

Many moms, despite having been athletes themselves, don't feel confident to volunteer.

About 80% of youth coaches are males and the coaching field should be more equal.

Some of the suggestions made:

Ask the moms specifically to coach.

Provide a female mentor to volunteer moms.

Provide female coaching clinics.

We are not living in a day where women, who are now moms, have not played sports. Many women have.

This was eye opening to me because, as I said before, I honestly hadn't ever thought about it. I'm already a coach so I will naturally want to coach my kids.

What do you think? Any thoughts from the article?

Are you a mom who has coached your kids? Have you been too timid to coach even though you have knowledge in the sport? Have you encouraged your wife to coach your kids?

I am definitely going to encourage more moms to coach their kids.
