Re-Upping Confidence

I have no idea if that is the right way to say what I'm saying, but that is what came out. The girls understood and that's what matters.
We do this drill called down ball co-op. For now I will spare you the details, except that we have 6 balls to get 30. We do this drill regularly and sometimes have gotten between 40-50. It is designed to deal with pressure when the ball has to go in.
One day we had a hard time with this drill. In fact, I think we did it three times and never got the goal. I told them the next day we were going to do it until we got our goal even if it took the whole practice. So on the 6th ball when they only needed 4 more, they got 47 IN A ROW with ONE BALL. They just kept going and going and going. It was a beautiful thing. That's when it hit me. Whenever they do this drill, even though they have been successful at it many times, they start the drill not truly believing they can meet the goal. The result is hesitation. And we all know that when we hesitate, we make more mistakes not less.
They do the same thing in games. They don't believe they will be capable of winning until something good happens. I know this is common, but it's hard when the team is extremely talented and hard working and experienced. I know they can be successful, everyone around them knows it, but I spend the majority of my time convincing them. So hopefully, at the end of the day or at the end of their volleyball career, they will have learned something about how to approach new and old tasks.
