So, I'm coaching an 11 and under team this year for club and we're the lowest of the 11s. Unfortunately, we haven't won very many matches. And that's ok. Someone has to lose. Oh, don't get me wrong...I hate losing. But I always say that the girls will respond to losing (and winning!) how I respond. If I respond in anger and frustration, then they will too. If I look at it as a learning experience and try to grow from it, then they will too. Fortunately and unfortunately because they are so young they don't always care as much. That is fortunate because often they will be able to move on easily. That is unfortunate because they tend to learn more slowly. And boy does this cause MAJOR inconsistency. But, this is life. In life, we sometimes learn lessons slowly and take a while to make the changes in our life that are necessary. Let's face it we will win some in life and we will lose some in life. The learning we do when we are young will set us up for success and failure when we are older. I think one of the hardest things about these girls losing a lot is how easily they get discouraged. Part of that is because they are less skilled than others. Part of it is that they don't know how to change their mindset and it is my job to help them! My hope and prayer is that the girls will really learn from the losing by accepting that they need to change and accepting that sometimes girls are just better than you.
