Go With Your Gut!

There are a lot of really great sports movies out there. Draft Day has become one of my favorites. It's different than most others in terms of the perspective. If you haven't seen it, it is about the NFL Draft and centered around the day Sonny Weaver, Jr., the General Manager of the Cleveland Browns. As a movie I liked it because I felt like all the issues were resolved. (sidenote: there were some things I didn't like - language, some of the conversation) As a person who loves sports stories I liked it because when Sonny Weaver Jr. had everyone else against him, he went with his gut. The reality of sports is that sometimes that is the only explanation. As a player and a coach there are times you have to go with your gut despite what everyone else around you might say. A player makes a decision about where to send the ball or who to give the ball to. A coach makes a decision about who is going to play, who subs, what play to run, etc. In Draft Day, Sonny Weaver Jr. had to decide who to draft. And I think that going with your gut is part of what makes sports so great. You can't always explain why. But after the fact, if you were right, everyone else understands.
