Eight Seniors

After the 2011 Royals season, the year we got 2nd at nationals, I had someone tell me that we would be rebuilding the next year. I politely responded (I don't remember what I said) but I knew better. I did lose 7 seniors that year, but not all of them were starters. I knew the younger girls on that team had tons of potential and heart and skill. So in 2012 and 2013 we got 5th and in 2014 we got 3rd. If we were rebuilding, the results don't show it!
Now, I'm rebuilding. The younger girls have become older girls and are now graduating. I have 4 returning girls on varsity. I also have a great crop of jv girls.
I have LOVED the time I had with these seniors.
These girls come to me and say things like:
"Coach, can I share a verse with the team before the game today."
"Coach, can I lead a devotion at the tournament this weekend."
"Coach, we would like to pray for healing for your wrist right now."
In the gym, I will miss their leadership. They set the standard for communication and for including the younger girls and making them feel welcome. They work hard and as a result others follow suit.
I will miss them. Period.
But such is the way of sports. Kids come and go. And while it will be sad not to see them in the gym anymore, I am excited about the girls coming up. I'm excited to get to know these girls better and see who is going to step up and set the standard and who is going to be the spiritual leaders.
