Do You Ever Need a Break?

I have known for about 2 years that I needed to take a break. Coaching 2 seasons a year takes its toll on me mentally. I only get one week break between the fall high school season and the club season. So this club season I took off. This decision was confirmed many times but especially during the fall when I was planning practices. I think one of my strengths as a coach is practice planning. I don't like to do the same things all the time and I want to be efficient and productive. I remember one time last October where I counted the number of practices I had left to plan. Mind you, I was having a blast with my team, but my mind was done. I have spent these last few months organizing my house, starting to prepare for home schooling, and getting involved with the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA). Now I am only a few weeks away from starting our off-season practices. The only volleyball I have planned since November is a 3 day New Year's Camp. I hope and pray that I got back with a fresh mind and new insight into the players and the game.

What about you? Do you need a break sometimes? If you don't get a long break like I have had, what do you do in your short breaks to keep your mind fresh?
